vierter stock projektraum berlin präsentiert Sue Hornbostel. Die aus Wien stammende Künstlerin nahm im letzten Jahr am vierter stock Artist-in-Residence-Programm teil (Abhängen mit dem Segen des Bundespräsidenten). Der mehrwöchige Aufenthalt im sommerlich-ausgelassenen Berlin inspirierte die Künstlerin zu einer neuen Serie von Arbeiten, die sie nun bis zum 20. März 2010 in vierter stock zeigt.

Sue Hornbostel arbeitet mit einem für Malerei eher untypischen Material. Auf den ersten flüchtigen Blick wirken ihre Arbeiten wie Aquarelle. Die Bilder zeigen zwar klare Konturen, erwecken jedoch den Eindruck einer merkwürdigen Verschwommenheit. So handelt es sich bei Hornbostels Arbeiten auch nicht um Aquarelle, sondern vielmehr um Acrylfarbe auf Schaumstoff. Der Stil ihrer Malerei in Verbindung mit dem Material zeichnet die Unverwechselbarkeit ihrer Werke aus. Die Weichheit und Bequemlichkeit des Schaumstoffs verarbeitet Hornbostel in jedem Ihrer Motive auf subtile Art und Weise. Der Betrachter verfällt bei längerem Hinsehen beinahe in einen Zustand selbstvergessener Ruhe. Gleichzeitig bildet die Oberfläche der Arbeiten einen starken Kontrast zum Gesamtbild. Das Material nimmt die Farbe buchstäblich auf, wodurch eine sehr harte und brüchige Acrylschicht entsteht. Nicht zuletzt deshalb bezeichnet die Künstlerin ihre Arbeiten als „soft and cracky“, also schaumstoffweich aber gleichzeitig brüchig. Ebenso im Gegensatz zum „weichen“ Material  stehen die Motive von Hornbostel. Sie zeigt urbanes Leben in all seinen Formen, darunter häufig Motive aus den Hauptstädten der Welt. Auch hier wird der Kontrast zwischen Tatsächlichkeit und den Werken der Künstlerin deutlich. Urbane Zentren bieten viel. Doch Gemütlichkeit, Ruhe und Erholung gehören meist nicht dazu. Ebendies kreiert Hornbostel jedoch in Ihren Arbeiten. Kurz, Sue Hornbostel schafft in Ihren Bildern das, was dem Großstadtmenschen so schwer fällt: Gelassenheit und Entschleunigung.

Neben zahlreichen Schaumstoffmalereien installiert die Künstlerin in vierter stock projektraum berlin selbst ein urbanes Zentrum der Ruhe. Sie zeigt sogenannte Miniateliers, die, ähnlich eines Puppenhauses, Miniaturszenen des Alltags nachstellen. Zudem werden den Besuchern zur endgültigen Entspannung eine Installation mit Hängematten zur Verfügung stehen: „ Mein Konzept ist, dass ich es nicht so „kalt“, white-cube-mäßig will. Ich möchte es dichter, bunt und "wärmer", mit mehr Möglichkeiten für die Besucher zum  Sitzen, Liegen, Herumgehen...“. So soll es sein!

Susanne Hornbostel lebt und arbeitet in Wien. Nach dem Abschluss ihres Studiums als Meisterschülerin im Jahr 2003 an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Wien, absolvierte sie zahlreiche Einzel- sowie Gruppenausstellungen. vierter stock projektraum berlin präsentiert die erste Einzelausstellung der Künstlerin in Berlin.

vierter stock projektraum berlin presents the works of Sue Hornbostel. The Vienna-based artist participated in the artist-in-residence program this last summer. The weeks in summer-relaxed Berlin inspired the Austrian artist to create a new series of works, which she will be showing until March 20th at vierter stock.

Sue Hornbostel works with a rather untypical medium for painting - at first sight do their works have an effect as water colours. The pictures do have clear shapes, but they are at the same time particularly fuzzy. Then we realize that they aren‘t any water colours, but acrilic on foam. The contrast of the stile of her painting in connection to the real nature of the material in which they‘re done is what distinguishes them. The foam‘s softness and comfort is what Sue Hornbostel adapts to each of her motives. By watching them long enough, you would say you could surrender to a condition of complete calm. At the same time, the surface of the works form a contrast to the whole structure of the picture. The material absorbs literally the color, with the final result of a very thick - and fragile - lay of painting. Maybe this is the reason why the artist describes her works as „soft and cracky“. Also the motives form a contrast to the soft material. Susanne Hornbostel shows us episodes of the daily life in all its different moments, especially those in the big cities. Also here, the reality and their pictured version of it collate against each other.  Cities offer a variety of things, but what they surely don‘t offer is coziness, calm and repose. But this is what Sue Hornbostel exactly creates with her works - a oasis of peace in the middle of the city jungle, with serenity and deceleration as the main assets to follow.

vierter stock as such will turn into an urban oasis of calmness during the show - next to the foam pictures, there will be little mini-studios that will represent scenes of our quotidianity. Last but not least, the visitors will be able to relax while lying on hammocks, which will be specially installed for the exhibition. „My concept pursues a warmer asset than the cool white cube. I like it dense, cheerful, and cozy. With seating areas for the visitors, so they can sit, lye down, walk through -  that‘s the way I like it!“.

Susanne Hornbostel lives and works in Vienna. Since her graduation in 2003 at the Akademie der Bildende Künste in Vienna she has participated in multiple solo and group shows. vierter stock proudly features the first solo show of the artist in Berlin.
